Pickleball: The Fastest-Growing Sport You Need to Try

Pickleball is taking the world by storm! It has become America’s fastest growing sport, reported by Pickleheads. I don’t know about you, but I’ve been noticing that most of the tennis courts near me have been converted to pickleball courts, and I’ve been seeing this across the country! I’ve even seen several international resorts recently build pickleball courts on their property for their visitors. With 36.5 million pickleball players in the US and 10,320 places to play pickleball in the US, its popularity is obvious (Source: Pickleheads).

Wild Growth

According to Pickleheads, there’s been a whopping 467% increase in interest in pickleball over the past 5 years. Pickleball’s average growth rate over the last 3 years was 158.6%, and it’s predicted to grow 7.7% through 2028 (Source: Pickleheads). The pickleball paddle market size in 2021 was $152.8 million (Source: Pickleheads).

Why is Pickleball So Popular?

Like golf, it’s a sport that all ages and skill levels can enjoy. The largest age group is 55 and up, followed by ages 18-34 (Source: Pickleheads). Although, there are slightly more male pickleball players, both genders participate, with males making up 60.5% and females making up 39.5% (Source: Pickleheads).

It’s also popular because it’s easy to learn. According to New York Times, the shorter and lighter paddle, plastic wiffle-like ball, and underhand serves make learning and playing easier. It’s also a low impact sport with a slower pace and a smaller court which makes it more appealing for all ages and skill levels. It’s great exercise – Pickleball Adventure reports that you can burn up to 350 calories per hour!

Plus, pickleball allows for exercise and social interaction at the same time. According to New York Times, although 50% of people stop exercising after 6 months, pickleball players keep it up because of the social aspect. It’s a great way to socialize and meet new people, especially if you play doubles.
